Hargeisa Neuropsychiatric Hospital
Architects Without Borders | Hargeisa, Somaliland
2017

In response to Somaliland’s critical healthcare shortages, particularly in neurology and psychiatry, the Hargeisa Neurology Hospital is designed as the region’s first dedicated neuropsychiatric facility. The project embraces vernacular architecture, using locally sourced materials to address the challenges of limited resources and harsh environmental conditions. A modular system allows for flexible expansion, with the ability to create specialized inpatient wings, outpatient clinics, diagnostic rooms, and therapy areas, as well as open outdoor spaces that promote community engagement and healing.
The design also responds to the region’s hot climate and water scarcity. The roof functions as both a sun-shading element and a rainwater collection system. During the monsoon season, rainwater is captured and stored for use throughout the year, contributing to the hospital's sustainability. The design blends local materials, climate-responsive solutions, and flexible spaces, creating a sustainable and adaptable healthcare facility that will serve as a vital resource for Hargeisa’s growing neuropsychiatric needs.
