Life Hub

The “Life Hub” project revitalizes a closed train station in Oakland, transforming it into a dual-purpose community and transportation hub to address local social and spatial needs. Located in a former industrial area now being redeveloped, the design reconnects the site with new residential districts while integrating essential social infrastructure. Architecturally, the structure consists of two distinct masses: a vehicular zone for transit operations, including bus parking and maintenance, and a pedestrian zone dedicated to community activities, with the ground level open for public events. The pedestrian mass floats slightly below the vehicular level, enhancing accessibility and inviting community engagement. At the core is an open-air intersection linking the two zones—a dynamic, sky-lit gathering space that serves as the building's central node, promoting interaction and circulation across all areas. This pivotal space reactivates the station’s original function while fostering a cohesive, community-friendly environment.
